The ‘Like Jesus’ challenge: Week 5 (Spending time with God)

By September 4, 2017 Like Jesus Challenge
Week 5:spending time with god

Hey guys!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend. How did you do on last weeks challenge? If you haven’t done last weeks challenge, click here. If you would like to start the challenge from the beginning, click here.

This week, we are going to be focusing a little bit more on the time you spend with God. So, if you are listening to the instructions, I continually tell you that you need to be spending time with Jesus in order to actually have a relationship with Jesus. Praying and studying the Bible are important in your walk with God. You can’t have a relationship with someone you don’t talk to. You can’t worship someone you know nothing about. That is why it is so crutial that you read your bible and pray as much as you possibly can on a daily basis.

Whenever I went a few weeks without reading the Bible, I was a brat. I had an attitude and really, I was just overall mean. Some of my friends can testify to that. Reading the Bible and spending time with God helps you grow your fruit of the spirit. If you apply the things to your life, you will continue to get more joy, kindness, etc.
week 5 of the like Jesus challenge will be about spending time with God. You read for it?

Week 5: Each day this week, after spending time with God, send your notes to 3 friends and remind them to spend time with Jesus as well.

If you do not take notes, I highly encourage you to. If I didn’t have my notes, I wouldn’t remember anything. When I take notes, I can actually go back and reread them if I needed to. For me, I have to take notes. My accountability partner and I send each other our notes every day so we can make sure we’re spending time with God and even learn about what they are reading or see a certain passage from a different perspective.

If you don’t have an accountability partner, you should really pray about getting one. They can help you to stay encouraged, remind you to spend time with God, and be a helping hand to you in your walk. You aren’t supposed to do this alone. Don’t. So when spending time with God each day this week, make sure you send an accountability partner your notes and remind them.

Remember, stay smiling! Memorize more bible verses! Keep doing all of the past challenges and let God change your heart. I hope you all have a blessed week

The ‘Like Jesus’ Challenge: Week 4 (Self-Confidence)

By August 28, 2017 Like Jesus Challenge
self-confidence

Welcome to Week 4: Self-Confidence!

The challenge I am about to ask you to do this week might be especially hard for some people. I know I struggled with this for a long time and still do on occasion. This whole week, you need to do this one simple task to help with your self-confidence. It won’t take any longer than a couple minutes of your day.

The Challenge

All of week 4, I want you to look in the mirror at some point through out the day and tell yourself 5 things that you like about yourself. You can say it in your head or even out loud but if you’re in public, some people may think you’re crazy. Hey, who cares! As Christians, we are supposed to stand out. So if you want to talk about all the things you like about yourself out loud, DO IT.
You are beautiful.

Personally, if someone told me to do this every day for a week about a year ago, I can positively tell you, I wouldn’t be able to find one feature that I liked about myself. This is something I really struggled with. Every girl that would cross my path, I would instantly point out to myself how pretty they were and it would make me compare myself to them. I’m so glad that God worked on that with me because I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have the self confidence that I have now while I’m going through what I’m going through.

Comparing

If I’m being honest with you all, I have been going through a  pretty rough breakup. I’ve had to watch him bring girls to church and watch him flirting with them and laughing with them. God has been working in me so I don’t get jealous but it takes me quite a bit of self confidence to not start looking at all my flaws when he’s bringing all these beautiful women to the church. I still find myself comparing myself to them sometimes but I am going to continue working on it. You should too!

You are so beautiful in the eyes of God. He made you look just the way He wanted you to look. He looks at you and sees no faults. God doesn’t look at all your flaws; He looks at all the beautiful. You look exactly how God wants you to look.

So everyday, look in the mirror. Tell yourself you like your hair. Say that you love the clothes you wear. Share about how beautiful the color of your eyes are! There are so many things that you could say each day. God did not make junk when He made you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14). You’re shaped the way you are for a reason. You have the voice you have for a reason. The facial features you have, God designed perfectly the way he wanted. Quit looking in the mirror and thinking bad things about yourself. Ultimately, what you are saying is, “God, I know you made me the way you wanted but I don’t think you did good enough.”

Don’t let the world define beauty

Stop letting the world decide wether you are beautiful or not! The world does not know the true definition of beauty, they have a twisted, unrealistic version of beauty. So if you are a Christian, go to Gods word. See what He has to say about how beautiful. I promise, you will not be disappointed. God thinks highly of you; He doesn’t want you looking in a mirror bashing yourself or comparing yourself to other people. There is only one blueprint for you, as my pastor would say. You are one of a kind. You’re a snowflake.

You can’t change who you really are; you can’t change the way you look. So stop trying to fit in when you were made to stand out. If you can’t change how you look, why get upset about it, you have to deal with it anyways.

I wish I could change my voice

This is something I used to wish every day. Then I realized that I was telling God He didn’t do a good enough job. If God called me to lead worship, then why don’t I have a voice like Lauren Diagle or Steffany Gretzinger? God spoke to me and removed these thoughts from my head. An old pastor of mine once said, “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” I could compare my voice to other singers and say how much better they are then me, but where does that get me? No where. Because in the end, my voice is still the same, but now I am just thinking my voice isn’t very good.

I’d much rather remember that God has placed a calling on my life to lead worship for a reason. What if me having a better voice would have made me get big headed and proud? What if that made me prideful? There is a reason for everything. God hears my voice. He hears me singing to Him, whether I am singing like Kari Jobe or like someone who can’t even stay in key. I have learned to love the voice God has given me and that has allowed me to go way further than I ever thought I could.

Never in my life would I have thought I would go from turning my piano all the way down so no one could hear me in a worship band, to being a worship leader, playing guitar (an instrument that isn’t even my main instrument) and singing. God can take, even the things you think aren’t good enough, and use them in a huge way. So as you go through week 4, try your hardest to boost your self-confidence.

Self-confidence is attractive

I don’t know if you know this or not, ladies, self-confidence is so attractive. Now hear me out, don’t go all crazy boasting about how beautiful and awesome you are. Don’t be prideful about it. Just being able to take compliments and walk confidentially makes you a thousand times more beautiful. You don’t need to go fishing for compliments when the Bible has plenty of those for you from someone far greater than anyone walking this earth. Know what God says about the way you look. Don’t look in the mirror and bash a beautiful thing God has made.
So, for all of week 4, say 5 things about yourself that you like. Don’t do this half-heartedly. Seriously try to be more confident in who you are, you aren’t changing that. So accept it and realize how beautiful you are! Self-confidence is waiting… your move.

Reminder:

Just like I say at the end of most of these challenges, make sure you continue doing the past weeks. Keep smiling and remembering bible verses. You want to continue doing these things as much as you can until it becomes more natural to do them. Your heart and attitude will change. But only if you are in the word of God daily and spending one on one time with Him because ultimitely, we need to be growing deeper and deeper into our relationship with Jesus. Good Luck!

The ‘Like Jesus’ challenge: Week 3 (Memorizing Scripture)

week 3-memorizing-scripture-bible verses

Hey there again!

Glad to see you reading this for week 3 of the like Jesus challenge. How did last week go for you, smiling at everyone? I hope it went very well. I’d love to hear about it! Today, I will be sharing with you what you will be doing all of this week (week 3). Are you ready?

Week 3: Memorize one bible verse and find a way to use and apply it each day this week.

It’s one thing to know the scripture but it’s a game changer when you are acting them out and actually doing what they say. Take some time today to find what scripture you want to learn this week and start memorizing. Learn it so well that when you hear the reference, you can quote it without any hesitation. If you have never learned scripture before or aren’t really sure how to, click here to read my post about memorizing scripture.

It is important for us to be learning scripture as Christians. We don’t always have a bible with us. It can be very beneficial to have some key verses in your mind and heart. Go back to the bible verse you choose as often as you can this week. Look at it or say it multiple times a day. Say it to a close friend; say it in a prayer.

Why?

Learning scripture can be super encouraging for you and others around you. If you are trying to take action in the Bible verses rather than just reading or memorizing them, you are going to make a huge impact in your life and in many others around you.

If you want to follow Christ and be (humble, kind, forgiving, etc) like Him, then memorize scripture. I promise, if you do rather than just read it and forget about it, your heart will begin to change. Your attitude will move out of the way to make even more room for God in your life. But if the extent of this is just memorizing or reading a scripture, you are not going to get what you are wanting out of this challenge.

Apply it.

Matthew 18:21-22 says, “Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.” If you were to memorize this verse, it does you no good unless you apply it to your life. You shouldn’t be memorizing this bible verse but holding a grudge on Susan from a year ago when she stole your $1.50 that you were going to buy a Spongebob ice cream with.

I know when your brothers and sisters sin against you, it may be a bit worse than stealing $1.50 from you but regardless of the situation, the Bible says it plain as day. Forgive. Even when you don’t want to. Even when you’ve given them more chances than you think appropriate.

The point of me saying all of this is, don’t learn the scripture and then not apply it to your life. Learn it and then let it change you because it will, if you let it. So for this whole week, take out some time to learn one or two scriptures really well and try your hardest to apply it to your life each day this week. It may be hard at first but I promise, you will get the hang of it!

Don’t forget!

Do the other weeks challenges as well. Continue praying for others. Continue smiling at people. Use these challenges to form healthy habits that will brighten your day and your walk with God. Let these challenges allow God to change your heart and attitude. Make sure you read your bible every day this week as well! You have to be in the word if you want an attitude adjusment. Good luck this week!

The ‘Like Jesus’ Challenge: Week 2

By August 14, 2017 Like Jesus Challenge
week 2

Hello, Welcome to Week 2!

This is week 2 of the ‘Like Jesus’ challenge. I hope everyone did good on week 1. I hope you are ready to jump into week 2. This weeks challenge is super simple. Notice, I said simple, not easy. There is nothing easy about the challenge I am asking you to do this week.

Smile at everyone you come in contact with.

Like I said, simple. NOT EASY! Taming your words is hard but it is easier than controlling your facial expressions. Often times, you don’t even notice you have an unwelcoming expression. It is wise to be slow to anger and to think before you speak but another thing that would be wise would be being more careful with your expressions.

You may be saying nice things but your face may be saying, “get out of my face; who gave you permission to speak to me.” You know what I mean? Another thing I am really bad about is rolling my eyes after I turn my back. This is not the attitude of Christ. So we need to be trying our best to remove it.

So rather than making a facial expression, smile. Just smile. Don’t have any other emotion showing on your face other than a huge smile! Smile at everyone you talk to. Even short conversations. Sometimes, when I have a really bad day, just someone smiling at me genuinely can make a world of a difference. Seriously, try it. Do it all week.

Be Joyful

Besides, you have so much to smile about. You have so much to be thankful for. Smile because you are a Christian, forgiven, and free. Smiling can even up lift you. If you smile, I promise, it will become natural. This small thing can make an impact on your day. As Christians, we are supposed to be joyful. Let me tell you… nothing says joyful more than a big ol’ frown. Kidding. Be joyful and smile. For every one reason you have to frown, you have a dozen reasons to smile. The bad doesn’t outweigh the good, even if it seems that way. So just smile for week 2. You have so much to smile about.

Don’t forget!

Make sure you spend time with Jesus every day this week. This challenge will not be as beneficial if you are not in the word. If you need help, contact me; I gladly will. Make sure to being doing week 1 throughout the week too. Continue these things so that they become a habit! These things are odd for us, that’s why we have to keep on!

Good luck smiling this week! Make a difference with something as smile as your beautiful smile! Be ready for next week!

Have a blessed day everyone.

-Chrissy

WEEK 1: PRAY FOR THE FIRST 5 PEOPLE THAT COME TO YOUR MIND

Week 1

Thank you for joining me on this journey. If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to. We are just starting week 1, hop on board! One of the greatest things you can do in your relationship with Jesus is… praying. Prayer is a very intimate thing you can do to grow in your relationship with Jesus and it is vital that you do it. How can you have a close and personal relationship with someone without talking to them? Through this challege I will be stressing the need for prayer. A lot of weeks, you will be praying often.

But I’m not good at praying…

You aren’t? Wow, I’m just ashamed of you. KIDDING! A lot of people are not strong in the skill of praying. When people used to be like, “Alright Chrissy, pray,” my heart would skip 30 beats. I’m not very good at talking in general. There is something about the room being really quiet that makes my skin crawl. Every time I prayed, it would be a 10 second prayer. I would have like 15 words between ‘Dear Jesus’ and ‘Amen.’

When you say I don’t want to pray or I’m not good at prayer, someone always likes to call you out. I used to hear, “Well, if you don’t pray in public, you don’t pray in private.” Hearing that made me so angry. I prayed all the time in my personal life… but I prayed in my head. It is different talking out loud or in front of people. I used to get so discouraged when people would ask me to pray. I’d either refuse or say a ‘bad prayer.’

No prayer is bad

I cannot tell you how many times I would place my prayer in the ‘bad’ catergory. Listen. No prayer is bad. I used to hear everyone else pray and they would pray for like 5 minutes using big words and creative sentences. That was discouraging to me because I wansn’t ‘good’. I did not understand why I wasn’t good at praying. I did it often. I was tired of refusing to pray. I knew I had to change this because I know God has called me into some sort of minestry. I’m going to have get better at praying out loud.

Pray out loud

This has helped immesnly. At first it was a bit awkward and I felt like I was talking to myself. Start praying when you’re alone, out loud. It will help. I started off with short prayers but now I can pray out loud for hours. Praying this way allowed me to get closer to Jesus because I talk to him now like I’d actually talk to a best friend. Which He is and He always has been; it’s just hard to be best friends with someone you don’t spend time with and don’t talk to. You feel me? Dedicate a specific time to praying but still pray as much as you possibly can throughout the day. Just use those specific times as your prayer time regardless of what is going on because sometimes our minds go crazy through a busy day.

I chose to pray anytime I am driving and showering (like once every three weeks, just kidding, probably). More times you could pray is when you wake up, before bed, while brushing your teeth, everytime you pick up your phone, etc. There are many times you can dedicate to prayer. I promise, having this time set aside specifically for prayer will help you get in the habit of praying often. So try devoting some time to praying.

The Challenge: Week 1

So each day this week, pray for the first 5 people that come to your mind. It can be the same people every day or it can be new people. Just make sure to do it each day. It doesn’t have to be a 4 hour long prayer but actually relax and take a few minutes praying for the people that Jesus lays on your heart. This not only helps you to get closer to God but it is also a great way to humble yourself before others. You don’t have to tell anyone you are praying for them unless you feel God telling you to. So make sure you pray for at least 5 people each day through the week. I’d write it down in a notebook so you can just keep track of your prayer life.

Why am I praying for others?

week 1I love those two verses because a lot of times, we are focused on us. When we pray, we say God, do this for me. Make this happen for me. I thank you for what you're doing in my life. It is important be praying for your prayers to be about you. Change my attitude and my heart, guide my footsteps, help me. Not only should you pray for yourselves, you need to be humble enough to step past praying for only yourself. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray for your lost friends. Pray for others. This is a true step of humbleness. Christ give's us a great example of humility. Alot of times, we are focused on us. When we pray, we say God, do this for me. Make this happen for me. I thank you for what you’re doing in my life. It is important be praying about yourself, of course. Change my attitude and my heart, guide my footsteps, help me, but not only should you pray for yourself, you need to be humble enough to step past praying for you alone.

Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray for your lost friends. Pray for others in general. This is a true step of humbleness.

Christ give’s us a great example of humility in Philippians 2:3-4.

Remember, like I said in my post Monday (Read here), you need to be reading the bible and spending one on one time with Jesus all through out this challenge. Make sure to do it every single day this week. If you have never spent time with Jesus or aren’t really sure how to, email me below. Good luck on week 1 of the ‘Like Jesus’ Challenge!

Ultimate Christian Workout Playlist

I’ve recently started working out again. I know, shocker. Hopefully I will not end up quitting like every time I try this. We all do it. I know I’m not the only one. So in honor of me getting back into the workout saddle (is that a thing?), I’ve decided to put together a Christian workout playlist. When I work out, I love to listen to ‘get pumped’ music. Most of the time when I am running, slow worship songs comes on and although they are great songs, it just doesn’t fit the whole ‘get pumped’ mood.

You Won’t Relent

I love this song. The first time I heard it, I fell in love with it. The words are just so astounding. There are 4 different parts to the song and they are all amazing.
This is one of my favorites to do with the youth because it is such an emotional song. I could do this song every single Wednesday because it’s that good but most Wednesday’s we don’t have a drummer. My boyfriend says that this song needs drums or else it won’t have the dynamics it needs to sound phenomenal. This song has a lot of quiet and an equal amount of loud parts to it. There are a lot of builds and a lot of drops. So if you’re going to do this song, drums are recommended.

5 Things to get a guitar player

Guys are super hard to shop for. I never know what to get my boyfriend. Luckily, he is a guitar player which makes it a little easier. There are countless things you can get a guitar player. Here are some gift ideas for that amazing musician in your life.

1. A Ditto loop pedal

I actually just recently got my boyfriend this for christmas. He asked for it for about a year until I finally decided he was worth that much money. I’m just kidding. I’d buy him the whole world… if I could afford it. Anyways, the ditto loop pedal is fun and entertaining. Good way to finally get rid of that clingy boyfriend of yours. Kidding again.

With the pedal, you hook it up to your guitar and record a short rhythm on guitar (or any instrument that is able to hook up to it) and it loops over and over. Then, you can add a bunch of layers doing different things! It’s really awesome.

Here is a link to one of the cheaper ones on amazon. Now, there are more brands than just ditto. I’m only telling you ditto because my trusted, guitarist boyriend told me it’s a really good loop pedal brand.

2. Guitar picks

I don’t care how many picks you think your boyfriend has. He doesn’t have enough. I play guitar too. So I know that you can never have enough picks. They dissapear. I never know where any of my picks go. One second theres one in my mouth and next thing I know, it’s no where to be found. I probably eat them. Once again, I’m just kidding. But really, they go missing every time it leaves your hands.

This is a link to a 100 pack of guitar picks. I like the assortment. I’m not really picky when it comes to what type I strum with. See what I did there? This pack has thin, medium, and thick. Your boyfriend may like a specific size, feel free to ask. If you just want to guess, I’d get either an assortment or medium. I actually bought these for myself to fill up my ‘pick’ jar and I love them! It even comes in a cute box.

3. Guitar Pick Keychain

Now, personally, I’ve never had one of these but I think they are so cool. I need to actually get one. It’s just a little pouch that holds a few guitar picks. He will always have a pick with him then.

4. “World’s Okayest Guitar Player” T-shirt

This shirt is so true. I would wear this night and day. Don’t get this for him if he will take it seriously and not as a joke because that wouldn’t be good. Then he would be mad and upset and you will have to burn it… along with his hopes and dreams that you just crushed. Seriously though, if my lovely boyfriend wasn’t going to read this post, I would totally get it for him. But since I know he will read it, it just gave away the surprise. I need a new plan.

5. Amp Coffee Mug

Now, this is a great gift for the coffee-loving, guitarist in your life. It’s so adorable. The shape of the mug is an amp! Who doesn’t think that’s cute?
