Reaching Out in Faith: Seeking God Despite Imperfections

Lessons from the Woman with the Issue of Blood

Two Sundays ago, the pastor at my church was speaking on believers hiding from or seeking God. Before singing “More” by Red Rocks Worship for the invitation song, I thought about the woman with the issue of blood from Mark 5. The lyrics express a desire for ‘More’ of God and His healing touch, mirroring the woman’s faith in reaching for Jesus’ robe. Like her, we long for God to touch and heal our weaknesses.

It’s so easy to sing about touching the robe of Jesus, but would you actually do it? In the cultural context of that time, the woman’s condition would have rendered her ceremonially unclean under Jewish Law (Leviticus 15:25-27). Due to her impurity, she likely faced mistreatment and exclusion from society, making her an outcast- unable to participate in normal community life. Touching a rabbi like Jesus while in her unclean state was a bold and risky move, potentially leading to severe repercussions or rejection. In that era, men and women were not supposed to touch in public unless they were immediate family members. Her decision to seek and reach out to touch Jesus’ robe was an act of audacity and desperation, defying societal conventions.

Everyone wants to pray but no one wants to be the answer

Everyone wants to pray but no one wants to be the answer

“I’m praying for you.”

I would be quick to say that those four words are one of the most used sentences out of a Christian’s mouth. OF COURSE, that’s not a bad thing. We are supposed to pray for our brothers and sisters, and even people we don’t know. How many of us actually do it when we say it?

My pastor always asks questions like, “When’s the last time you wept for a brother and the situation they are going through? When’s the last time you wept for someone other than your family?”

Those questions really hit me every time he asks them because many a time, we can’t even remember the last time, which is not good at all.

Struggling with Self-Confidence?

Self-Confidence

This is one of the harder topics to talk about because I think this is something everyone struggles with in some shape or form, whether they want to admit it or not. You see, no matter how good or amazing you think you are, there will always be someone who does it better.

Open when you are feeling sick

WHAT TO PUT INSIDE ‘OPEN WHEN’ LETTERS: part 10

Being sick really sucks. It drains you and takes out the little energy you actually had. When your boyfriend is sick, let him have an open when you are feeling sick letter to open up to at least lighten his mood. If the amazing person in your life is always taking care of you, shouldn’t you do the same?

Open When you need to know how much I love you

WHAT TO PUT INSIDE OPEN WHEN LETTERS: Part 8

Sometimes our significant other just needs to know how much you love them. Obviously you aren’t going to be able to explain that in one little letter but you can try. Here’s an idea of what to say in the letter.

Making Time For God

I have so much to do

“You know I love you God but my teacher just offered me extra credit if I write a 3 page paper by tomorrow night and I really need it. Yes, I know I could have said no to working that extra shift tonight but God, I really need the money. You know, Valentine’s Day is coming up, I really wanna take my girlfriend/boyfriend to a good restaurant. I know I promised I’d spend time with you but I forgot to do my laundry the other day, I really need to do it right now.

I have to spend 2 hours minimum watching Netflix with my boyfriend/girlfriend. On suday mornings, I signed up to sing at church, be in the choir, and teach a Sunday school class for the children. I have to play guitar for about 1 hour in order to get better. I need to find time to sleep still, plus I have to use the bathroom every once in a while. God, I don’t think I have time for you today, but I promise, tomorrow, I will try to at least spend 5 minutes reading the Bible.”

Open when we are in a really big fight

WHAT TO PUT INSIDE ‘OPEN WHEN’ LETTERS: Part 7

All couples fight. It’s just something that happens. No matter how much you avoid it at the beginning, a fight will eventually make its way to the surface, whether it be something stupid or something serious. So make an open when letter about when we are in a fight. To be honest, I close myself off because of walls I’ve built. Rather than screaming or arguing, I tend to say nothing at all. Reason being, I will say stupid things I don’t mean. I’d rather say nothing and talk when I’m ready than to say things I don’t mean. Even though he will forgive me right away, I would feel so bad about it.

Open When things are falling apart

WHAT TO PUT INSIDE ‘OPEN WHEN’ LETTERS: DAY 2

OPEN WHEN THINGS ARE FALLING APART (or you want to break up or you are not so sure about us; just anything along those lines)

I think it’s rare to be in a relationship for a long time without thinking at some point that things don’t feel right. Sometimes there is doubt or fear, or maybe arguments. Sometimes our person needs a reminder to keep fighting, even when things are falling apart.
