The ‘Like Jesus’ Challenge: Week 1

By August 8, 2017 Like Jesus Challenge

Week 1

Thank you for joining me on this journey. If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to. We are just starting week 1, hop on board! One of the greatest things you can do in your relationship with Jesus is… praying. Prayer is a very intimate thing you can do to grow in your relationship with Jesus and it is vital that you do it. How can you have a close and personal relationship with someone without talking to them? Through this challege I will be stressing the need for prayer. A lot of weeks, you will be praying often.

But I’m not good at praying…

You aren’t? Wow, I’m just ashamed of you. KIDDING! A lot of people are not strong in the skill of praying. When people used to be like, “Alright Chrissy, pray,” my heart would skip 30 beats. I’m not very good at talking in general. There is something about the room being really quiet that makes my skin crawl. Every time I prayed, it would be a 10 second prayer. I would have like 15 words between ‘Dear Jesus’ and ‘Amen.’

When you say I don’t want to pray or I’m not good at prayer, someone always likes to call you out. I used to hear, “Well, if you don’t pray in public, you don’t pray in private.” Hearing that made me so angry. I prayed all the time in my personal life… but I prayed in my head. It is different talking out loud or in front of people. I used to get so discouraged when people would ask me to pray. I’d either refuse or say a ‘bad prayer.’

No prayer is bad

I cannot tell you how many times I would place my prayer in the ‘bad’ catergory. Listen. No prayer is bad. I used to hear everyone else pray and they would pray for like 5 minutes using big words and creative sentences. That was discouraging to me because I wansn’t ‘good’. I did not understand why I wasn’t good at praying. I did it often. I was tired of refusing to pray. I knew I had to change this because I know God has called me into some sort of minestry. I’m going to have get better at praying out loud.

Pray out loud

This has helped immesnly. At first it was a bit awkward and I felt like I was talking to myself. Start praying when you’re alone, out loud. It will help. I started off with short prayers but now I can pray out loud for hours. Praying this way allowed me to get closer to Jesus because I talk to him now like I’d actually talk to a best friend. Which He is and He always has been; it’s just hard to be best friends with someone you don’t spend time with and don’t talk to. You feel me? Dedicate a specific time to praying but still pray as much as you possibly can throughout the day. Just use those specific times as your prayer time regardless of what is going on because sometimes our minds go crazy through a busy day.

I chose to pray anytime I am driving and showering (like once every three weeks, just kidding, probably). More times you could pray is when you wake up, before bed, while brushing your teeth, everytime you pick up your phone, etc. There are many times you can dedicate to prayer. I promise, having this time set aside specifically for prayer will help you get in the habit of praying often. So try devoting some time to praying.

The Challenge: Week 1

So each day this week, pray for the first 5 people that come to your mind. It can be the same people every day or it can be new people. Just make sure to do it each day. It doesn’t have to be a 4 hour long prayer but actually relax and take a few minutes praying for the people that Jesus lays on your heart. This not only helps you to get closer to God but it is also a great way to humble yourself before others. You don’t have to tell anyone you are praying for them unless you feel God telling you to. So make sure you pray for at least 5 people each day through the week. I’d write it down in a notebook so you can just keep track of your prayer life.

Why am I praying for others?

week 1I love those two verses because a lot of times, we are focused on us. When we pray, we say God, do this for me. Make this happen for me. I thank you for what you're doing in my life. It is important be praying for your prayers to be about you. Change my attitude and my heart, guide my footsteps, help me. Not only should you pray for yourselves, you need to be humble enough to step past praying for only yourself. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray for your lost friends. Pray for others. This is a true step of humbleness. Christ give's us a great example of humility. Alot of times, we are focused on us. When we pray, we say God, do this for me. Make this happen for me. I thank you for what you’re doing in my life. It is important be praying about yourself, of course. Change my attitude and my heart, guide my footsteps, help me, but not only should you pray for yourself, you need to be humble enough to step past praying for you alone.

Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Pray for your lost friends. Pray for others in general. This is a true step of humbleness.

Christ give’s us a great example of humility in Philippians 2:3-4.

Remember, like I said in my post Monday (Read here), you need to be reading the bible and spending one on one time with Jesus all through out this challenge. Make sure to do it every single day this week. If you have never spent time with Jesus or aren’t really sure how to, email me below. Good luck on week 1 of the ‘Like Jesus’ Challenge!

Jesus, Reset my________

Jesus, Reset my ________.

Wow, this week has been absolutley crazy. At my church, we had this small event (Pulse Week 2017) that made a huge difference in a bunch of peoples lives. Youth gave their lives to Jesus and allowed Jesus to reset something that has been getting in the way of their walk with Jesus or reset something they put on the throne before God. I was completly in awe of the amazing things Jesus was doing within our youth. Leading worship for this event was very stressful at first.

With the limited time we prepped, it caused a lot of chaos each day before service. I had the attitude of ‘this is about to be horrible’ at the beginning of the week. By the last day, I had a complete heart change and reset. I just focused on worshipping rather than if people were playing the right chords. Worship was going to be just fine regardless. Worship is not a show, which is something I already knew, but it needed to be reimplanted into my brain. It is not a conerct. Sometimes, I just enjoy stopping all instruments and just have all the voices in the room to sing as loud as they can. God really moved through worship. I felt Him in the room and He was all over the place.

I loved leading worship this week. Simply because, regardless of the preparation, God still used us in a mighty way. I loved watching as of the students worship with all of their heart. I could see true, authentic worship. It was beautiful. Breathtaking. All through the services, I was smiling from ear to ear because of what Jesus was doing in my own heart.

For a while, I have been trying my hardest to “reset” my attitude and my heart (That is what the Like Jesus challenge is all about) for the longest time. I can honestly say I have been doing really good. Not because of anything I was doing but what Jesus was doing in me and inside my heart. The theme of Pulse Week was “Jesus, reset my_____.” I was so energetic and extatic because in this week and I really got to acknowledge all that Jesus has been doing in my heart.

My attitude has been different and my overall heart. I am so overjoyed with everything that I have been seeing Jesus do in my life and in my friends life. During worship, I loved doing the fast songs. I used to just raise my hands and worship during those fast songs, which is fine, but it is so much fun to jump around and act a fool praising Jesus. I got the honor of watching a bunch of teenagers jump all over the place, unashamed, praising God. Going crazy with them was so fun. Jesus didn’t make us to fit in and just clap to the beat. Let loose. Get crazy.

Fill in the blank.

jesus reset mySay, “Jesus, reset my _____.” Fill in the blank. What did you put in that space? Jesus reset my heart (mind, thoughts, relationship, voice, etc) What did you fill in there? Say it out loud. Ask Jesus to reset it. Give it to Him. Let Him reset something you need fixed in your life. Often times, we put other things on the throne that God is supposed to be on.

Can you think of something you are putting on that high place in your life. Sometimes you don’t want to admit it. In fact, sometimes you don’t even realize you put something else on the throne. Or maybe we ask God to scoot over so He can share the throne of your life with _______. (Your partner, your job, your family, church, etc.) Jesus doesn’t want to share the throne! He wants to be over your entire life; He wants to be your entire life.

How can you put only Jesus on the throne right now? How are you going to let Jesus reset _______? The way I am letting Jesus reset my heart is by reading the bible as much as I can, spending more time talking to God than I spend talking to anyone else, and by memorizing scripture.

So what are you going to do? Find a way to focus on God and keep Him on the throne. Keep your eyes on Him. His eyes were on you when He died on the cross for you. He can fix your heart, your mind, your relationship, and your voice. You have to let Him. You have to devote yourself to actually doing something about it.

Spend some time in prayer and talk to God about some things you could do to reset whatever you filled in that blank. Get into the bible and see what God has to say about what you are resetting. Give this to God, He will gladly take it. Nothing is too big for God. Give it to Him. Looking back, I laugh. I was at a place where I felt hopeless in my bitterness and in my thoughts. I never thought I could get away from it. Now that I let Jesus reset it, I’ve have never been so happy and energetic. Not today Satan!

It may feel hopeless right now but you need to remember who has you in the palm of His hands. Rather than falling backwards, fall forwards into the hands of God. He has your back. Don’t think you can’t do it. If you can’t, He can and He will gladly take your _______ from you and reset it. Give Him the chance to do it. Soon, you too will look back and smile. You will be able to say, “Jesus, thank you for being on the throne and for resetting my _____.”

Start the process of letting Jesus reset it.

Ultimate Christian Workout Playlist

I’ve recently started working out again. I know, shocker. Hopefully I will not end up quitting like every time I try this. We all do it. I know I’m not the only one. So in honor of me getting back into the workout saddle (is that a thing?), I’ve decided to put together a Christian workout playlist. When I work out, I love to listen to ‘get pumped’ music. Most of the time when I am running, slow worship songs comes on and although they are great songs, it just doesn’t fit the whole ‘get pumped’ mood.

Random Acts of Sharing the Good News

When I see someone do something nice for someone else, it absolutely warms my heart. I worked in a drive thru for three years and every so often, someone would hand me money and tell me to use that to pay for the persons meal behind them. Although it’s just a small act, it can turn someone’s entire day around. It would definitely alter my bad mood.
I love the thought of doing something nice for someone but one time changed my whole perspective on Random acts of kindness. Most people leave money taped to a vending machine or pay for the meal/groceries for the person behind them but one time, I was privileged enough to see something more than just an anonymous donation towards some food.

tips to help you ace a job interview

Want to ace a job interview?

Job interviews are scary. They are intimidating. How well you do decides the outcome. It is obviously nerve wrecking. They want to see who you are and what you can do for their business yet you can’t even act like yourself because you’re afraid that will ruin the chances of you getting a call back.

I actually have a job interview today. I am actually freaking out. I’m really weird. I will be going crazy about something because of how nervous and scared I am but then once I am actually in the situation, it’s not that bad and I usually handle it well. With all that being known, it still doesn’t stop me from being absolutely terrified.

4 lies I believed as a new Christian

Being a new Christian can be overwhelming. You get to watch your entire life do a 180. Sometimes it can be scary because it’s something you’ve never done before.More often times than not, a new believer can get caught up in the wrong mindset. Maybe we think these things because of watching other ‘christians’ or maybe it’s just something we think. Let me tell you a few things that I believed as a new Christian just in case you are in the same boat as I was.

Slow Song: Jesus I Come by Elevation Worship

Jesus i come lyrics chords start worship band

Jesus I come

I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I was driving to Michigan for Christmas and every single word just spoke joy into my heart. Ever since then, I have been begging for our worship team to do ‘Jesus I Come.’ We actually just learned it this past Sunday and will hopefully be playing it this Wednesday. I love both the chords and the lyrics to this song. My absolute favorite part of this song is the bridge.

Verse 1:
Oh how I need Your grace
More than my words can say
Jesus I come Jesus I come
In all my weaknesses
You are my confidence
Jesus I come Jesus I come
I will rise stand redeemed
Heaven open over me
To Your name eternally
Endless glory I will bring (oh)
Verse 2:
Oh what amazing love
We need Your cleansing flood
Jesus I come Jesus I come
In every broken place
You are my righteousness
Jesus I come Jesus I come
Thank You Jesus
Just as I am I come
Oh what amazing love

Why I love the bridge

The reason I love the bridge is because it says just as I am I come. It focuses on the fact that we don’t need to be perfect before we start following Jesus. We don’t have to have it all together because are savior has it all together. Jesus doesn’t want us after we have been a Christian for a certain amount of years. He doesn’t want us after we do a really good deed at least once a week. He wants us as we are. Jesus wants us in our brokenness. You don’t have to wait to put the pieces back together before coming to Him. Wanting to put the pieces back together is what He is wanting to do.

So when it says “Just as I am I come” it instantly brings tears to my eyes. A great and almighty God wants me. He wants my filth, so He can cleanse me. He wants my brokenness so He can fix it.

The entire song, overall was well written and makes for an amazing worship song. For the chords to this song, Subscribe below.

You Won’t Relent

I love this song. The first time I heard it, I fell in love with it. The words are just so astounding. There are 4 different parts to the song and they are all amazing.
This is one of my favorites to do with the youth because it is such an emotional song. I could do this song every single Wednesday because it’s that good but most Wednesday’s we don’t have a drummer. My boyfriend says that this song needs drums or else it won’t have the dynamics it needs to sound phenomenal. This song has a lot of quiet and an equal amount of loud parts to it. There are a lot of builds and a lot of drops. So if you’re going to do this song, drums are recommended.

What are you waiting for?

what are you waiting for time is precious

Before I was a Christian, all I did was wait and procrastinate. I wanted to be a Christian, I wanted to read the Bible, and I wanted to go to church. But what was I waiting for? What are you waiting for?

Every time I passed a duration in my life that I was potentially “waiting for” to get started,  I just came up with a new one.”I have enough books to read right now, I’ll read the Bible after I graduate.” “Sundays are a no go for me, I’ll wait until I have a car so I don’t have to bother anyone for a ride.”
