3 Reasons why you should I be memorizing scripture

memorizing scripture

Memorizing scripture

Memorizing scripture definitely does not lack effort. I used to try to memorize a new scripture. I learned it and could say it for a few days but then I completely forgot them. Zack and I learned a bunch of scriptures. The first one we learned was Proverbs 3:5-6 and the second one we learned was 1 Corinthians 10:13. Those are literally the only two I remember fully without hesitation. Now that I am even more in the word than I was at that time, I put more time into memorizing scripture for many reasons, which I will gladly share with you.

Reasons why you should be memorizing scripture…

1. It helps you

On many occasions, I have used the verses I memorized just to simply encourage me and help me remember what God says about what I’m going through. For example, when I am going through a trial, I can be quick to say James 1:2-3 in my head. Knowing that verse, I can quickly remind myself that there is a reason I am going through what I am; when my faith is tested, it produces perseverance and steadfastness.

I also love having a constant reminder of how deep God’s love  is for me, that God keeps His promises, that I need to go to God in prayer in every situation and be thankful for it, rather than being anxious, etc. See there are so many bible verses that could just change my overall attitude throughout my day and help me in my walk with God. Let bible verses and passages be in your heart and in your mind.

It really helps me to “do what Jesus would do” in every situation. As Christians, we are called to strive to be like Jesus.I don’t think the bible meant eat the pages when it said to have the word inside you. 1 John 2:6 says, “Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way he walked.” Notice it says walk in the same manner. We are never going to be anything like Jesus. Although we try to walk the same way He walked, we aren’t perfect like Him so we can’t but we need to be doing everything to try to. We need to try to be humble like He was, loving like He was, patient like He was, etc. (Take the “Like Jesus Challenge” with me!)

2. It helps others

Having the word in your heart and your mind could really help others if you let it. If you see a brother struggling or in need, you could quote a scripture or give him the scripture to look up for themselves to encourage them or even point them in the godly direction. I remember, my freshman year of high school, I had a girl that wasn’t a Christian in my gym class that I hung out with every day because I didn’t know many people (I was a weird, ugly freshman, scared to even speak to people). Every day, she would find a way to discourage me by being rude or mean to me. I’m not sure if she meant to do it but every day, after P.E., I would be in a horrible mood.

Not knowing what to do…

I went up to one of my favorite Christian friends that I highly looked up to as a newer Christian, K.C., and was just complaining about the situation to her in the lunch line. I remember her writing a scripture on my hand. It was Matthew 5:38-44. She basically just explained not to let anyone discourage me; I needed to turn the other cheek, go the extra mile for those who try to bring me down, and love and pray for the people that persecute me. I could never thank K.C. enough for giving me that scripture that day, I’d helped in a way she could never imagine. It stays with me and I use the lesson she taught me often.

If that simple scripture did what it did for me, imagine what you could do for others using scripture. Even though you may not think much of it or think it is that big of a deal, it is. It was a big enough deal to me that I am writing about it in a blog post almost 6 years later. Be an encouragement to others through the word. God gave it to us for a reason.

3. You may need it and not have it

I know this generation is filled with technology that can serve as a way to read the bible without having a bible with you. Sometimes, you won’t have that. You can’t always have a bible with you or have your phone out. What if you needed a scripture at work, while you’re with your friends, at a dinner, or a meeting? For me personally, sometimes God tells me to say a bible verse during worship. I can’t have a bible in my hand, searching for the scripture, while playing guitar. That would definitely be hard.

Rather than having to stop playing and getting out a bible, I could quote the scripture that I already have memorized. At my church, we have these small groups after service, and I am quick to quote scripture while talking about the service and what I learned. Sometime’s you need scripture but don’t have it with you or aren’t in a place where you can get to it.

How do you memorize scripture?

Well, everyone’s different. There are many ways to effectively memorize scripture. My best friend and I started learning scripture together; we learn a verse or two every week. I send her any new scriptures that I learn and she does the same for me. She constantly sends me a reference from the list and then I quote it back to her without looking. Like I did with Zack, we learned them good for a few days but I never went back to those verses so I forgot them after a week. If you are going back to these scriptures, it helps you to keep them in your heart and mind. The bible verses I am now learning with my best friend are verses I can say without hesitation or questioning if I said it right because I am always saying them.

When I memorize a verse, I write it in the back of my prayer journal with the reference and verse so that I can look at them after praying. Then, on another page, I just put the references so I can quiz myself.

Here are a few ways you can learn scripture better:
  • Set the verse as your lock screen and read it every time you open your phone.
  • Write the verse somewhere you’ll see it every day (On your mirror or in your locker).
  • Quote the scripture to a close friend every time you see them.
  • Write it on your hand
  • Read it 5 times, say it 5 times, then write it.

See, there are many ways to memorize. Those are just a few, I would love to hear what you do to memorize scripture. If you don’t memorize scripture regularly, I highly encourage you to. If you need any help, email me (icametoworship@gmail.com).

Love ya’ll!

Random Acts of Sharing the Good News

When I see someone do something nice for someone else, it absolutely warms my heart. I worked in a drive thru for three years and every so often, someone would hand me money and tell me to use that to pay for the persons meal behind them. Although it’s just a small act, it can turn someone’s entire day around. It would definitely alter my bad mood.
I love the thought of doing something nice for someone but one time changed my whole perspective on Random acts of kindness. Most people leave money taped to a vending machine or pay for the meal/groceries for the person behind them but one time, I was privileged enough to see something more than just an anonymous donation towards some food.

Slow Song: Jesus I Come by Elevation Worship

Jesus i come lyrics chords start worship band

Jesus I come

I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I was driving to Michigan for Christmas and every single word just spoke joy into my heart. Ever since then, I have been begging for our worship team to do ‘Jesus I Come.’ We actually just learned it this past Sunday and will hopefully be playing it this Wednesday. I love both the chords and the lyrics to this song. My absolute favorite part of this song is the bridge.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
Oh how I need Your grace
More than my words can say
Jesus I come Jesus I come
In all my weaknesses
You are my confidence
Jesus I come Jesus I come
Chorus:
I will rise stand redeemed
Heaven open over me
To Your name eternally
Endless glory I will bring (oh)
Verse 2:
Oh what amazing love
We need Your cleansing flood
Jesus I come Jesus I come
In every broken place
You are my righteousness
Jesus I come Jesus I come
Bridge:
Thank You Jesus
Just as I am I come
Hallelujah
Oh what amazing love

Why I love the bridge

The reason I love the bridge is because it says just as I am I come. It focuses on the fact that we don’t need to be perfect before we start following Jesus. We don’t have to have it all together because are savior has it all together. Jesus doesn’t want us after we have been a Christian for a certain amount of years. He doesn’t want us after we do a really good deed at least once a week. He wants us as we are. Jesus wants us in our brokenness. You don’t have to wait to put the pieces back together before coming to Him. Wanting to put the pieces back together is what He is wanting to do.

So when it says “Just as I am I come” it instantly brings tears to my eyes. A great and almighty God wants me. He wants my filth, so He can cleanse me. He wants my brokenness so He can fix it.

The entire song, overall was well written and makes for an amazing worship song. For the chords to this song, Subscribe below.

Slow Song: You Won’t Relent by Jesus Culture

you won't relent lyrics

You Won’t Relent

I love this song. The first time I heard it, I fell in love with it. The words are just so astounding. There are 4 different parts to the song and they are all amazing.
This is one of my favorites to do with the youth because it is such an emotional song. I could do this song every single Wednesday because it’s that good but most Wednesday’s we don’t have a drummer. My boyfriend says that this song needs drums or else it won’t have the dynamics it needs to sound phenomenal. This song has a lot of quiet and an equal amount of loud parts to it. There are a lot of builds and a lot of drops. So if you’re going to do this song, drums are recommended.

Set A Fire by Will Reagan

Set a fire is another one of our go to songs. It’s a song we have done a bunch of times. The thing about doing songs like this over and over is sometimes people can become numb to what they are saying. They will just sing it and not think about the words coming out of their mouths.

Open When You Are Feeling Sick

Being sick really sucks. It drains you and takes out the little energy you actually had. When your boyfriend is sick, let him have an ‘open when you are feeling sick’ letter to open up to at least lighten his mood. My amazing boyfriend is always right by my side when I am sick… Why shouldn’t I do the same.

You Can’t Read Your Bible Enough

Reading the bible is one of the most important things you can do as a Christian, as long as you’re doing your best to live it out. It’s something that brings you closer to God while it changes your heart and attitude. The more you read it, the more you learn. Trust me, you can’t read your bible enough. You use what you study through out the day and watch how God uses your new biblical knowledge to enrich your daily life. You are suppose to take up our cross daily and spend time with Him as much as we can.

6 Things To Do At Your First Practice

By September 23, 2016 Youth Worship
first practice

You’ve gotten kids that are interested… now what?

  • Plan a practice

(Preferably two per week ) that coordinates to your time as well as theirs. We do ours on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 4 p.m. Once you are with them, have them take a seat.

  •  Tell them a little about yourself and maybe even your testimony

Let them know that you take this very seriously and it’s not something to be in if you aren’t serious in leading people in worship. If they don’t know what worship is, give them your definition with some scripture to back you up. Tell them what they will be doing and what to be expecting. Basically just an introduction to worship.

  • Figure out what instrument everyone is playing

Then, set up so you can have the first practice.
