You Can’t Read Your Bible Enough
Reading the bible is one of the most important things you can do as a Christian, as long as you’re doing your best to live it out. It’s something that brings you closer to God while it changes your heart and attitude. The more you read it, the more you learn. Trust me, you can’t read your bible enough. You use what you study through out the day and watch how God uses your new biblical knowledge to enrich your daily life. You are suppose to take up our cross daily and spend time with Him as much as we can.
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
When I was about 16, I asked my friend, Zack, a question. (He is now my boyfriend and probably doesn’t even remember this.) I had also asked a few of my other Christian friends the question ‘how often you read your bible.’ Most of them said, “I try to read it everyday but sometimes I forget.”
When I asked Zack this question, he almost had the same answer. I remember replying something along the lines of “Alright, I’m good enough then because I read my bible at least two times a day.”
I’ll never forget his response. He said, “I mean you can never read the Bible enough.”
That was a huge slap in the face for me for two reasons.
I said I’m doing good enough
You can NEVER do good enough in your walk with God. Bettering your relationship with Him is something you can always be working on. You can never do good enough because at the end of the day, you still fail him. So do I. It’s human nature. Even at our best, we’re still not anything that amounts to God.
I was comparing myself
As I was texting all those people, what I was doing was comparing myself to others but not in a judgmental way. In my head I was thinking ‘Alright, I read my bible more than this person, so that means I’m doing really good in my walk with God and I don’t have to read anymore today.’ That’s not a good mentality to have. Don’t put a limit your time spent with God.
Getting into heaven is not going to be based on the person sitting next to us at church.
God is not up in heaven saying, “Oh Chrissy took notes today at church, Sally didn’t. Chrissy is going to heaven.”
That’s not how is works.
Rather than comparing yourself to other Christians, why don’t you compare yourself to Jesus. Ask yourself what you can do to be more like Jesus. Although we will never come close to being like Jesus, we are supposed to strive daily for it.
We are not good enough and we never will be. There’s nothing we can do to ever be good enough. We just have to be thankful that we have a merciful God that gives us grace when we don’t deserve it.
Don’t think you’re a better Christian than someone else. No matter how much you pray, you can always pray more. No matter how many good things you do, there’s always more that can be done. And no matter how much you read your bible, you can always read it more. You can read the bible 1,000 times from front to back and still learn a million new things everytime you read it. There could never be enough bible reading in your life because you can’t read the bible enough.
Focus on your walk with Christ, not on if yours is better than another Christians.
